‘Battle Royale II’ is an uneven, but worthy follow-up. It’s one of those sequels that tries something different, but is generally hated due to high expectations and the reputation of the mammoth original.

Here, the two ~censored~ take the story in the exact direction it needs to go. The survival game setting has been ditched…this time, it’s about all-out war between the children and the *****s. Naturally, there’s less intimate moments here and only a few characters are well-defined…but seeing the world of ‘Battle Royale’ explode in your face (literally) is completely involving.

The few good character moments we get here are nice and match up with the poetry of the original. Shuya Nanahara is a much more interesting and complex person this time. Shiori Kitano is one of the best characters in either film. And the over-the-top Riki Takeuchi almost steals the film.

There are flaws, though… The children feel less like individuals and more like a collective, so there’s less emotional involvement this time out…but that is perhaps inevitable, given the war setting. Plus, the resolution to the battle seems a tad anti-climactic.

Problems aside, this is a film well worth watching. The story is more complex, the battles are blistering, and the performances are great. It may not match the greatness of the original, but it’s certainly one of the better directions a sequel has taken.

The Banquet (2006)

"Let’s start with the craftsmanship on “The Banquet.” It’s impeccable. I give the people who worked on the visuals an A, maybe even an A+. You will not find a single frame in this film that wouldn’t make a great wallpaper. The costumes and sets, which are meticulously designed, look amazing. The locations are appropriately picturesque. The two lead actresses even become part of the eye candy. Some of the cinematography look like it came straight from “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.” The effects work, mostly used to show off the grandness of the palace, is solid for a Chinese production.

There’s also not a single sympathetic character in the film. We’re supposed to be rooting for the late Emperor’s son Wu Luan (Dan Wu) to avenge his father’s death and become the rightful ruler, but he spends most of his time brooding. I’m not sure if Empress Wan (Zhang Ziyi) is sleeping her way to the top out of pure ambition or out of necessity or both. Either way, it’s difficult to sympathize with an Empress who secretly lusts for her step-son. The Grand Marshall’s family is pretty dysfunctional as well. The brother lusts after his sister, who is in love with Wu Luan. It’s all very incestuous. I don’t have any problems keeping up with who’s lusting after whom, but the movie doesn’t make me want to care about any part of it.

In summary, “The Banquet” is a visually stunning film, but I wish the visual elements are employed in the service of a better story. That’s pretty much what other critics are saying too. Variety’s Derek Elley thinks the “main problem is Zhang, who carries herself with all the bearing of a power-hungry, lovelorn empress but doesn’t project the necessary charisma of an evil queen.” The Hollywood Reporter’s Kirk Honeycutt says “The Banquet” wastes its “astonishing” and “strikingly beautiful” production “with a cliched, long-winded, logic-busting, overacted film that at times seems like a parody of the martial arts genre.” Screen Daily’s Dan Fainaru thinks it’s “way too long for its own good, and may prove quick-lived at box offices after initial attention.”

“The Banquet” is directed by Feng Xiaogang, China’s most commercially successful director. He helmed “A World Without Thieves” (Andy Lau) and “Cell Phone,” both blockbusters in China.”

Synopsis

Based on the popular Internet novel, "Multi-Cell Girl", the film takes place in "No-Use High School", a school renowned for its ***ual aberrations. The student body is comprised of ***ually ambiguous teenagers, and the student president and vice-present flaunt their taste for S&M. Independent study and supplementary classes are done on homo***uality and transgenderism, and teachers and students alike leave school early because of ***ually-transmitted diseases. But amidst this environment, there are some that just can't adapt. This has a really nice cast, with some of the most talented youngsters in the scene: Lee Kyun from cult sitcom 안녕, 프란체스카 (Hello Francesca); Kim Byul, from the great short Drama 태릉선수촌 (Taereung National Village); Kim Ok-Bin from 여고괴담 4: 목소리 (Voice) and the KBS Drama 안녕하세요 하느님 (Hello, God!), and her partner in the show joining her once again, Yoo Geon. The ***-comedy angle is considerably less prevalent in the finished film than was suggested in the marketing materials - if you go looking for tittilation you will be disappointed - with Lee consistently choosing to mock attitudes toward *** rather than spread flesh on the screen.

Synopsis

A cute Korean story about a girl Jini and her memories of first loves. Her mom gave her a diary at coming of age and in the movie she goes through her past boyfriends and reflects on how they've given her memories. The turning point in the movie would be when her conscience (made possible by some pretty funny looking CG creatures) advises her to try and get revenge on her loves until they've learned a lesson. Suddenly the movie takes a turn from cute romance love story to funny petty revenge. Its all in good fun though as most of the tactics she has are harmless and just cute.

So the Koreans are now knocking off American horror flicks. But they are doing so with style. DOLL MASTER is a close copy of PUPPETMASTER and DOLLS, and even has a little CHILD'S PLAY going for it. Several young *****s are invited to attend a special event at a gallery filled with dolls, only to find they are targets of a vengeful spirit. The dolls come to life and do some pretty nasty things to the kids. The gore level is reasonably high, the photography and set design and production values are first rate, the acting isn't all that bad, and the scares are definitely there. DOLL MASTER may not be in the same league with A TALE OF TWO SISTERS or even DEAD FRIEND, but it's close. Give it a watch. You won't be disappointed.

Kim’s unpredictable genius takes a fashionable issue to extremes in order to probe the dark, jealous core of a relationship gone wrong.

Attractive Seh-hee (Park Ji-yun) is having problems with her boyfriend, Ji-woo (Ha Jung-woo). After two years, their love has entered a period of weariness. Though faithful to his fiance, Ji-woo eyes other women and, in bed, seems to get excited only at the thought of making love to other partners. Seh-hee can’t cope with the mounting jealousy tainting her life and decides to dramatically change her look - to become a new woman, with whom her boyfriend can again fall in love.

She enters a plastic-surgery clinic and then vanishes for six months - long enough for the scars to heal - leaving Ji-woo hurt and confused by her disappearance. Resurfacing as the new waitress at the coffee shop Ji-woo frequents, Seh-hee - now calling herself See-hee (Sung Hyun-ah) - tries to seduce him. But between them stands the spectre of Ji-woo’s lost girlfriend, with whom he is still very much in love. Jealousy once again creeps into the shaky existence Seh-hee has artificially crafted.

A clean style guides the circular syntax of this extreme tale of love. Set mostly in coffee shops and bars, where the intimacy of a lovers’ discourse is shared by curious clients, Time is steeped in a quiet, disturbing violence that censors feelings and mutilates the soul through body surgery. As if trapped within a meandering, irrational mind, the script follows a complex rhythm that mirrors the obsessive tone of the film and displays once again Kim’s talent for transforming high-concept ideas into incandescent cinema.

Superstar Gam Sa-yong (Superstar Mr. Gam)’’ is part of a wave of films this sweet and modest story set in the early days of Korean baseball has all the ingredients necessary to be a hit with the whole family. Much like the taekwondo tale “Tollyochagi (Spinkick)’’ that came out earlier this summer, “Superstar’’ tells of underdogs in sports and in life trying to overcome their limitations. The film is based on the true story of Gam Sa-yong (Lee Beom-su), whose five-year record as a professional baseball pitcher was one win and 15 losses. A regular company man with aspirations to be a professional baseball player, Gam’s dreams come true when the Korean Baseball League is founded in 1982 and a team _ the Sammi Superstars, sponsored by Gam’s company, Sammi Steel _ is set up in his hometown of Incheon. Gam takes part in an open tryout held by the Superstars, and contrary to all expectations, ends up making the team. It turns out, however, that Gam was only brought onto the team because they had to have a left-handed pitcher in their lineup, and he ends up spending most of his time on the bench, watching as his hapless team _ the worst in the league by a mile _ chocks up loss after loss. In fact, the only time Gam gets on the mound was in the final innings of a losing game, when the team wanted to rest their “real’’ pitchers and when most of the crowd were already heading towards the exit. Embarrassed to tell his family of the reality of his baseball career, Gam waits for a chance to play in a big game and watches longingly as famous pitchers like OB Bears’ Park Chol-sun (Gong Yu) race towards league records. Despite all the losses faced by the main character,
