the new generation of microsoft certifications (http://www.microsoft.com/learning/mcp/newgen)

Top Questions

Q. What is the new generation of certifications

A. The new Microsoft certification program is designed to emphasize both the primary technology skill set and the job role of the individual. By focusing on core technical or professional skills, individuals can work toward a certification that meets their needs

The program provides shorter certification paths targeted to specific job roles or technologies, so individuals can more quickly acquire relevant credentials to prove their expertise and organizations can to quickly ensure that IT professionals have the right skills for their projects. These shorter certification paths are also more cost-effective

The new framework makes it easier for managers to distinguish candidates that meet specific job criteria. Fewer credentials and logos make it easier to understand qualifications while still offering the level of distinction needed to use certification as a recruiting tool

The program introduces three series of credentials

Technology Specialist (MCTS): This series validates core technology and product skills, such as how-to or implementation skills
IT Professional and Professional Developer (MCITP and MCPD): This series validates specific job-role skills outside of core technology, such as operational processes and procedures, and analyzing business problems
Architect (MCA): This series validates the skills required to successfully impact business IT , These include technical breadth, technical depth, communication, strategy, organizational politics, process, and leadership

Q. What does the new program mean to me

A. The new program makes your certification path simpler and more targeted. The program allows you to choose a credential path as either Technology Specialist or Professional, and you will be able to showcase your specific skills directly on your certification logo
The new program works in tandem with current credentials. Your current credentials will be recognized for as long as they are in demand

Q. What happens to my current certification

A. Professionals who hold any currently recognized Microsoft certification do not need to renew their credentials. Your current credentials will be recognized as long as they are in demand, and they will continue to be supported by Microsoft. Microsoft continues to recognize the following certification

Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician
Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator on Microsoft Windows Server 2003
Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer on Microsoft Windows Server 2003
Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator on Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer on Microsoft Windows 2000
Microsoft Certified Database Administrator on Microsoft SQL Server 2000
Microsoft Certified Solution Developer for Microsoft .NET

Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer + Internet on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
Microsoft Certified Professional + Internet on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
Microsoft Certified Professional + Site Building
Microsoft Certified Professional
Microsoft also continues to recognize its specializations in Messaging and Security for the MCSA and MCSE certifications. Exceptions are certifications that have already expired

Q. Will my current certifications expire

A. No, your current certifications will not expire

Q. Should I stop my current credential path

A. No. Continue pursuing your current credential. It's still the most relevant credential in the market for the products you are certifying in. An upgrade option toward the next credential will be available

Q. What should I do if I'm currently an

A. MCP? Your MCP credential is not affected by the new certifications. If you are interested in becoming certified in Visual Studio 2005, SQL Server 2005, or BizTalk Server 2006, please review the credential requirements
MCSE, MCSA, or MCDST? You do not need to do anything at this point. When Microsoft releases the next version of the Windows client and server products, the new credentials will follow the new structure, with a Technology and Professional series. MCSEs, MCSAs, and MCDSTs will be offered an upgrade path to the new credentials
MCDBA? Your MCDBA credential in SQL Server 2000 continues to be recognized by Microsoft, and you do not need to do anything to maintain it. Upgrade options for the new Microsoft SQL Server 2005 credentials will be available for those currently certified as MCDBAs. You can upgrade to the new MCITP: Database Administrator credential with one exam after earning the prerequisite Technology Specialist credential. Note that the requirement for Professional Developer: Enterprise Applications Developer includes all three of the .NET Framework 2.0 Technology Specialist credentials

If you are upgrading from a current MCDBA, MCSD on .NET, or MCAD on .NET, the exam requirements are different from those of new entrants

================================================== =====
Exams

Q. How will the exams be different

A. The Technology Specialist exams go into greater depth on technology features, functions, and how-to skills than previous exams. The Professional exams focus on technology job-role skills—for example, deployment, planning, and project management skills. Candidates should have direct, hands-on experience with a technology and job role before taking these exams

Q. Will there be new simulations

A. There are no current plans to release new exams with simulations. However, Microsoft will continue to invest in new performance-based testing, and exams with simulations are possible in the future

Q. Will there be a Technology Specialist exam for every Microsoft product

A. Not necessarily. However, Microsoft will continue to provide skills validation for technologies and job roles based on customer and partner demand

Q. What is Microsoft doing about paper MCSEs and the "brain-dump" Web sites

A. Adding simulation technology will make it more difficult for the so-called brain-dump Web sites to be effective. In addition, Microsoft has a team that works to find the illegal brain-dump Web sites and then takes appropriate legal actions

Q. Will each new exam incorporate performance-based testing

A. No, not all exams will incorporate performance-based testing. Many skills cannot be validated using performance-based testing. For example, a decision-making skill does not lend itself to validation using simulations

Q. When will the simulation exams become available

A. The simulation exams are scheduled to be available in late January 2006. To ensure the experience is the best that it can be, we have been monitoring the performance of exams 290 and 291 and looking at customer input on the new item types. In addition, we are doing extensive testing on the new simulations for 293 and 294 and will have a beta process for these exams

Q. Can MCPs refresh their credentials with the performance-based criteria

A. We will not offer a refresher exam for existing credential holders. The current plan is to gradually release performance-based testing into the core tracks over the next year and to include this new exam type in all future credentials as it makes sense

Q. Will I receive a new Technology Specialist certification when I pass an existing exam like 70-271 (Supporting Users and Troubleshooting a Microsoft Windows XP Operating System)

A. No. In most cases, the Technology Specialist certifications will be available only for new Microsoft technologies, and current exams will remain linked to their respective credentials. However, there may be some exceptions, and Microsoft Learning reserves the right to make programmatic changes as necessary

================================================== =====
Technology Series
Q. Who is the Technology Specialist credential for

A. The Technology Specialist exams are targeted to a specific technology so you can demonstrate your expertise in that area. A Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) is consistently capable of implementing, building, troubleshooting, and debugging a particular technology. The Technology Specialist has the depth of skills to fully support the technology

================================================== =====
Professional Series

Q. Who is the Professional credential for

A. Microsoft Certified IT Professionals (MCITP) and Microsoft Certified Professional Developers (MCPD) are consistently and fully capable of deploying, building, designing, optimizing, and operating technologies for a given job role. They have demonstrated the comprehensive skills required to perform the job successfully and must remain current in best practices and technologies

================================================== =====
Architect Series

Q. Who should consider the Architect certification program

A. The Architect certification will require advanced and verifiable experience in IT (at least 10 years) and experience as a working architect (a least 3 years). The Microsoft Certified Architect (MCA) credential will not rely on prepackaged curriculum or traditional exams. Instead, candidates must demonstrate their skills and knowledge by creating architectures that solve complex business problems and then present their solutions to a review board of peer architects

Q. What competencies will the Architect program address

A. A candidate for the Architect program will need a broad-based knowledge that extends well beyond the bounds of any particular Microsoft technology. In addition, the nontechnical skills domain that candidates will face throughout the process will be broad, including knowledge areas such as project management, decision making, strategic thinking, and communications. The current expectation is that about a quarter of the emphasis of a candidate's knowledge will be on breadth and depth of technology skills; the rest will relate to general architecture principles and best practices that aren't technology specific

Q. Does the certification cover only Microsoft technologies

A. No, the certification is designed to prove a breadth of skills and knowledge across multiple platforms and products

Q. What are the minimum requirements

A. There will be an application process required to enter the program. The application process will ensure that candidates have the foundation of skills as well as sufficient real-world experience as an Architect required to be successful in the program. Details of this process will be available by the end of 2005

Q. When does it start

A. The program is now in the pilot phase and it is expected to open for public enrollment in 2006. Announcements on the formal application process will be made by the end of 2005

Q. How long will it take

A. Final timeframes are still being defined, but the current expectation is that it will take between 6 and 12 months to complete the program

Q. How much will it cost

A. The final price has not yet been determined. The program is being operated on a costs-recovery basis. The cost for staffing and running a week-long review board is approximately US$10,000 per candidate, so the expected price is about US$10,000. A final price will be announced by the end of 2005

Q. I noticed that candidates will be assigned a mentor. What does that mean

A. Upon acceptance into the program, candidates will be assigned a mentor to help foster their success through the program's rigorous certification process. All program mentors will have already completed the certification process. Mentors will come from Microsoft and from external sources

Q. Why do you expect the Architect program to have status

A. The desire for this type of certification is higher than that for other certifications because of the process that candidates go through to become certified. Additional demand is a result of the expected benefits candidates receive after achieving certification. The program seeks to certify Architects who can create business solutions that help increase ROI for Microsoft customers and partners

Q. I am an MCSE. Is my next move Architect

A. Your next move should be to get real-world architect experience. Microsoft will be providing guidance about the skills required to become an MCA, but candidates for the certification will also need to prove they have been working in IT for 10 years and acting in an architect capacity for at least 3 years

Q. Is the Architect certification available in all regions

A. Not currently. All planned review boards will be held in English and will require candidates to be able to present their solutions in English. Additionally, with one or two exceptions, all review boards will be held in Redmond, Washington. Additional information on the worldwide availability of the Microsoft Certified Architect program will be available in mid-2006

================================================== =====
Technology

Q. What are the requirements for SQL Server 2005 certification

A. We have introduced both Technology Specialist (MCTS) and IT Professional (MCITP) series credentials for database professionals using SQL Server 2005. The new credentials are more targeted and cost-effective than the MCDBA, with more focus on the job-role requirements for database professionals

The Technology Specialist: SQL Server 2005 credential requires one exam. After obtaining the Technology Specialist credential, a candidate will need to pass two exams for each of the SQL Server 2005 Professional credentials

IT Professional: Database Developer
IT Professional: Database Administrator
IT Professional: Business Intelligence Developer
For MCDBAs there is an upgrade path requiring the MCTS credential and one additional exam to become an MCITP: Database Administrator. No upgrade path is available for MCITP: Database Developer or MCITP: Business Intelligence Developer.

Q. What are the requirements for Visual Studio 2005 certification

A. We have introduced both Technology Specialist (MCTS) and IT Professional (MCITP) series credentials for professional developers using Visual Studio 2005. The new credentials are more targeted and cost-effective than the MCAD and MCSD, with more focus on the job-role requirements for professional developers

The Technology Specialist credentials for Visual Studio 2005 require two exams for each of the following credentials

Technology Specialist: .NET Framework 2.0 Web Applications
Technology Specialist: .NET Framework 2.0 Windows Applications
Technology Specialist: .NET Framework 2.0 Distributed Applications
After obtaining a Technology Specialist credential, a candidate will need to pass one
additional exam for each of the following Visual Studio 2005 Professional credentials

Professional Developer: Web Developer
Professional Developer: Windows Developer
The Professional Developer: Enterprise Applications Developer credential requires all three of the Technology Specialist credentials as a prerequisite. After achieving each of these, a candidate must pass one additional exam

For MCADs there is an upgrade path of one exam for their choice of the Professional Developer: Web Developer or Professional Developer: Windows Developer credentials. For MCSDs there is an upgrade path of two exams for the Professional Developer: Enterprise Applications Developer credential. The Technology Specialist prerequisite is waived for those upgrading from MCAD and MCSD

Q. What are the plans for Longhorn

A. We are starting to plan for the Longhorn Server and Vista Client credentials, but no information is available about structure or upgrade options

Q. Why is Database Developer an IT Professional certification instead of a Professional Developer certification

A. Customer feedback indicates that database professionals relate more to an IT professional role than a developer role in terms of the skills required and daily tasks

Q. Will there be a certification exam to cover the Windows Server 2003 R2 Release

A. There is no exam planned for the R2 release of Microsoft Windows Server 2003

Q. Are you going to decertify the MCSEs on NT 4.0

A. No. There are no plans to decertify MCSEs on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0

================================================== =====
Value

Q. Why should I get certified

A. Studies have shown that certified individuals realize many benefits. Among them

Increased opportunities on the job. These opportunities range from salary and bonus increases to project involvement and promotion
Increased breadth of knowledge. Certification is a catalyst for learning new technologies in a structured and comprehensive way
Increased value to the organization. Organizations with 25 percent or more of their staff certified have been shown to deploy projects on time and within budget more often, rely less on external support, have less downtime, and have higher user satisfaction with their IT staff

Q. What is Microsoft doing to promote certification

A. Microsoft recently upgraded the certification Web site to make it easier for individuals and IT managers to find the information they need to make certification decisions. We added several case studies to help IT managers understand the value of certification, and we added a verification service that individuals can use to help IT managers verify an individual's certification status. In addition, Microsoft has launched several promotions to help individuals become certified
