A. The Technology Specialist exams go into greater depth on technology features, functions, and how-to skills than previous exams. The Professional exams focus on technology job-role skills—for example, deployment, planning, and project management skills. Candidates should have direct, hands-on experience with a technology and job role before taking these exams
Q. Will there be new simulations
A. There are no current plans to release new exams with simulations. However, Microsoft will continue to invest in new performance-based testing, and exams with simulations are possible in the future
Q. Will there be a Technology Specialist exam for every Microsoft product

A. No, not all exams will incorporate performance-based testing. Many skills cannot be validated using performance-based testing. For example, a decision-making skill does not lend itself to validation using simulations
Q. When will the simulation exams become available
A. The simulation exams are scheduled to be available in late January 2006. To ensure the experience is the best that it can be, we have been monitoring the performance of exams 290 and 291 and looking at customer input on the new item types. In addition, we are doing extensive testing on the new simulations for 293 and 294 and will have a beta process for these exams
Q. Can MCPs refresh their credentials with the performance-based criteria
A. We will not offer a refresher exam for existing credential holders. The current plan is to gradually release performance-based testing into the core tracks over the next year and to include this new exam type in all future credentials as it makes sense
Q. Will I receive a new Technology Specialist certification when I pass an existing exam like 70-271 (Supporting Users and Troubleshooting a Microsoft Windows XP Operating System)
A. No. In most cases, the Technology Specialist certifications will be available only for new Microsoft technologies, and current exams will remain linked to their respective credentials. The Microsoft Certified Architect (MCA) credential will not rely on prepackaged curriculum or traditional exams. Instead, candidates must demonstrate their skills and knowledge by creating architectures that solve complex business problems and then present their solutions to a review board of peer architects
Q. What competencies will the Architect program address
A. A candidate for the Architect program will need a broad-based knowledge that extends well beyond the bounds of any particular Microsoft technology. In addition, the nontechnical skills domain that candidates will face throughout the process will be broad, including knowledge areas such as project management, decision making, strategic thinking, and communications. The current expectation is that about a quarter of the emphasis of a candidate's knowledge will be on breadth and depth of technology skills; the rest will relate to general architecture principles and best practices that aren't technology specific
Q. Does the certification cover only Microsoft technologies
A. No, the certification is designed to prove a breadth of skills and knowledge across multiple platforms and products
Q. What are the minimum requirements
A. There will be an application process required to enter the program. The application process will ensure that candidates have the foundation of skills as well as sufficient real-world experience as an Architect required to be successful in the program. Details of this process will be available by the end of 2005
Q. When does it start
A. The program is now in the pilot phase and it is expected to open for public enrollment in 2006. Announcements on the formal application process will be made by the end of 2005
Q. How long will it take
A. Final timeframes are still being defined, but the current expectation is that it will take between 6 and 12 months to complete the program
Q. How much will it cost
A. The final price has not yet been determined. The program is being operated on a costs-recovery basis. The cost for staffing and running a week-long review board is approximately US$10,000 per candidate, so the expected price is about US$10,000. A final price will be announced by the end of 2005
Q. I noticed that candidates will be assigned a mentor. What does that mean
A. Upon acceptance into the program, candidates will be assigned a mentor to help foster their success through the program's rigorous certification process. All program mentors will have already completed the certification process. Mentors will come from Microsoft and from external sources
Q. Why do you expect the Architect program to have status
A. The desire for this type of certification is higher than that for other certifications because of the process that candidates go through to become certified. Additional demand is a result of the expected benefits candidates receive after achieving certification. Q. I am an MCSE. Is my next move Architect
A. Your next move should be to get real-world architect experience. Microsoft will be providing guidance about the skills required to become an MCA, but candidates for the certification will also need to prove they have been working in IT for 10 years and acting in an architect capacity for at least 3 years

A. Not currently. All planned review boards will be held in English and will require candidates to be able to present their solutions in English.
