GTA:libert city stories
Call it Grand Theft Auto Gaiden. While there have been handheld takes on the GTA series in the past, none of them have ever properly captured the things that made the modern installments in the series so popular. Things like the sprawling environments, its fast-action freestyle mayhem, and, of course, the series' great sense of humor just haven't come across on a handheld before. Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories is not without its problems, either; but it gets enough of the series' signature features in there to do you right.

Toni Cipriani is a no-nonsense kind of guy.
Liberty City Stories brings you back to Rockstar's fictional take on New York City, first seen this way in 2001's revolutionary GTA III. This time around, the year is 1998, and you play the role of a returning wise guy named Toni Cipriani, who works for Salvatore Leone. Upon your return to town, you get right back to work, because the Leone crime family is about to start getting it from all sides. As you ascend to become Salvatore's right-hand man, you'll start and finish gang wars with other mafia types, a few triads, the yakuza...pretty much all of the usual suspects are present.

If you're familiar with the various mafia presences over the course of the past three GTA games, you'll recognize a few of the names and faces here. But the story stands alone and doesn't require you to remember the various cast members. That's a good thing, because the mafia characters in the other GTA games have been largely forgettable. The game's storyline really isn't up to par with the console installments in the series, because very little actually happens. Even potential plot points, like when Toni finally becomes a made man, are squandered by a bad cutscene that doesn't actually show the ceremony. The game's mission path doesn't deviate into crazy territory, and most of the characters are fairly lifeless. There are no enigmatic weirdos like Truth, the crazy hippie from San Andreas, or Steve Scott, the porno director from Vice City, to break up the heavier-handed mafia tasks. This dulls the game's personality, preventing its characters and events from becoming as memorable as we've come to expect from GTA games and their excellent storylines.

If you stick to the missions and don't mess around too much, you can finish the game's story mode in 10 to 12 hours. But the deceptive game-progress counter will only report around 40-percent completion if you stick close to the missions and don't do much else. The game has some rampage side missions and the standard pizza delivery, vigilante, taxi service, and ambulance missions, too. You can seek out ringing pay phones to get into street races. You can report to car lots to sell cars or motorcycles by test-driving vehicles for prospective consumers. And, of course, there are 100 hidden packages to find. If you get into all this optional stuff, there's a lot more city to see, and plenty of different cars to see it in.

The game's different outfits let you change your look from time to time.
Over the years, the missions in Grand Theft Auto have gotten more complex, but the overall difficulty has lightened up. The missions in Liberty City Stories, however, are extremely simple for the most part. Most of your given tasks are one-dimensional, such as stealing a specific car and driving it back to a location without wrecking it, or taking out a series of gang members and blowing up their prized tank. A few missions get a little deeper, but at some point, the missions just start to all run together because they aren't very interesting. The combat-heavy missions tend to be a little tougher than the driving tasks, because the game's control scheme occasionally gets in the way. The lock-on targeting in GTA games has always been a little squirrelly, but when you add a less-than-optimal target-changing control to that mix (left and right on the D pad, by default), you end up with some frustrating moments. In missions where you're given a large number of targets to take down, you're better off doing it from a distance with a sniper rifle, if possible.

لقيت تقرير عن the warriors اتفضلو
Despite the fact that it's based on a film more than a quarter-century old, very little about Rockstar's The Warriors feels dated or archaic. This stylish, retro brawler takes Walter Hill's cult-classic film of the same name and delves even deeper into the seedy, ultraviolent world of New York City gangs. Backed up by a more-than-competent gameplay engine and significant attention to detail, The Warriors works because it simply gets the concept of massive gang battles right. Everywhere you look, street toughs are battling it out, smashing each other with bricks, tossing each other through windows, and generally wrecking all manner of shop. It doesn't really matter if you're familiar with the film it's based on; The Warriors delivers as a completely stand-alone work, and any fan of beat-'em-up games is certain to enjoy it on some level. But if you have seen the film, all the better.

You Warriors are good. Real good.
The Warriors documents the trials and tribulations of, well, the Warriors, just one of hundreds of gangs bopping their way around New York City in the late 1970s. The movie from 1979 picked up just as the Warriors were on their way to a huge meeting, held by one of the city's biggest gangs, the Gramercy Riffs, and its enigmatic leader, Cyrus. At this meeting, Cyrus poses a single question to the hundreds of gang representatives in attendance: "Can you count, suckas?" Pointing out that between their numbers, the various gangs of the city outnumber the police by a three-to-one margin, Cyrus lays out his plans for a unified gang movement; a single 60,000-member gang that could rule New York. But just when it seems like the crowd is behind him, a lone gunman fires, killing Cyrus and sending the crowd scattering as police surround the area. The opening scene of the game shows this exact sequence of events, but shifts dramatically away from the movie from this point forward. From there, we hop into the wayback machine to a few months before this meeting, a time when the Warriors were still working to up their rep on the streets.

The film didn't spend much time with things like backstory and narrative beyond the gang's flee from the meeting and subsequent danger-filled trek back to their home turf on Coney Island. But the game goes back and gives these characters, as well as the many other assorted gangs that occupy New York, some context. You get to know the nine primary guys--Swan, Ajax, Cleon, Vermin, Cochese, Cowboy, Snow, Fox, and Rembrandt--quite well. Better than you might even expect. Throughout the 20-plus story missions, you'll get to play as each of them at one time or another, and you'll learn how Cleon and Vermin started the gang, how each member came to join, and even learn all about the gang's rivalries, especially against Coney Island's other crew, the Destroyers. What's impressive about this is that it actually feels like you're getting to know more about these characters, rather than just running through some tacked-on motions to stretch a two-hour movie into a 12-hour game. On some level, you start to get attached to these characters, which makes the course of the later game sequences (which are directly tied to the movie) all the more meaningful, as some members are knocked out of the picture, and the Warriors themselves are wrongfully marked for Cyrus's murder.

It helps that the script and storyline are both really well written, and the dialogue, though curse-filled and generally blunt, fits brilliantly with the hard-edged atmosphere The Warriors aims for. However, it bears mention that you shouldn't go into this game expecting to play as a bunch of boy scouts out fighting for justice. All the members of the Warriors are morally bankrupt in one way or another, and though they are the main protagonists and are generally likeable guys, they're still street thugs, just like all the other street thugs out there. They vandalize, rob, and fight for a living, trolling for chicks and throwing down just to up their street cred. Throughout the course of the game, you'll be doing all of the above.

For the most part, The Warriors is a pure beat-'em-up, which of course means that you'll be doing an awful lot of brawling. Each of the Warriors fights roughly the same. You have weak and strong attacks that can be put together into a reasonable number of different combos, as well as a grab move for grab attacks and throws. Jumping and ground attacks are also thrown into the mix. Different types of weaponry will fall at your feet as you knock fools silly and break apart the scenery, and there's a wide variety of items to bop with, from simple bricks and boards to shivs and bottles. No guns, though. This is old-school gang fighting at its finest, and as such, firearms simply don't enter the picture--not for you, anyway.

The basic fighting engine found in The Warriors is mostly pretty simplistic, but because of the unpredictability of the environments, as well as the sheer number of fighters that can appear on screen at once, things can get very hectic, very fast. It's great, because while you do only have a few attacks to choose from, you still have to be somewhat methodical in your attack methods, or you could suddenly find yourself flailing wildly at air, allowing eight enemies to surround you and subsequently beat the hell out of you. During the biggest brawls, you'll sometimes find yourself doing something or seeing something in the periphery that just strikes as awesome. Be it two of your cohorts ganging up with baseball bats on one guy, or you tossing some punk through a window without even trying, there's a lot of possibility for unpredictable mayhem in this game.

Can you count, suckas?
Sometimes the mayhem can be made more purposeful, thanks to some tactical commands you can give to your gang members. Titled warchief commands, these quick, easy instructions will cause your team to do anything from scattering from police to simply breaking everything in sight. If you're in a defensive position, you can command them to come in and get your back. If you've absolutely, positively got to get away, just tell them to follow you. All it takes is you clicking down on the left analog stick (on Xbox) or the R2 button (on the PlayStation 2) and selecting one of the six available orders via the right stick. Your artificial-intelligence-controlled cohorts seem to react to the commands remarkably well. Sometimes they'll get held up by opposing gang members or cops trying to stop them, but they rarely seem to get hung up of their own volition. The only annoying thing about this mechanic is related specifically to the Xbox version. A lot of other quick, sometimes tough actions are mapped to the left analog stick, and it's really easy to accidentally click it in. Fortunately, the commands won't change unless you press the right stick too, but you will hear the same voice command over and over every time you click it in. That does get rather grating after a time.

While many beat-'em-ups tend to get old after a few hours, simply because they rely so heavily on just sending waves and waves of bad guys at you, The Warriors avoids this particular trapping by breaking up the action with plenty of other tasks. Sometimes you'll simply find yourself tasked with collecting protection money from Coney Island businesses, or stealing car stereos and breaking into and looting shops. Other times, you'll find yourself in a heart-pounding chase sequence, running from rival gangs or pursuing some rat who's wronged your crew.
There are plenty of times where you'll have to play things stealthy, lest large swarms of opposing gang members or cops come barreling down on you. Sometimes it's when you're trying to make an escape, or sometimes it's when you're out to make some moves, like getting your tag on in a graffiti-tagging challenge. Admittedly, the stealth portions of the game are probably the weakest, simply because the stealth attacks tend to be more trouble to pull off than they're worth. But the sequences themselves are usually set up quite well, since the level designs often provide plenty of nifty hiding spots and unique paths to check out--plus, it's rarely too difficult to bop your way out of a bad situation, should you find yourself in one.

The chicks are packed! The chicks are packed!
The rival gangs aren't always the most challenging opponents to beat down, but they don't go down without some measure of fight. They've always got numbers on their side, and gang-member AI is usually pretty solid. Cops are another story--they, like gangs, will swarm in numbers, but they're incredibly tough to knock down. They have a nasty habit of arresting your brothers in arms, forcing you to periodically run over and unlock them via a quick button-mashing minigame. Generally speaking, it's best to try to avoid cop fights whenever possible; but sometimes it just isn't, and these brawls can be kind of frustrating. Fortunately, The Warriors employs a good checkpoint-save system, making it so that you rarely have to do any long sequences over and over again.

What The Warriors ultimately does best is tie together film and game. For those of you who have never seen the film, it took an almost parodied look at the gang scene of New York from some 25 years ago, with lots of kooky-themed gangs, like the Hi-Hats, a group of malcontent mimes that run Broadway; the Baseball Furies, a crew of baseball fanatics, complete with uniform, bats, and freaky face paint; and the Gramercy Riffs, a group of martial-arts-loving brothers with a military-like level of discipline and dedication. All of these gangs live and breathe in a bleak, scuzzy, almost postapocalyptic vision of NYC. Every building, tree, and car has a dingy, soiled look to it, and it's picture perfect for the look of the film. The game expands on the gangs, giving groups like the Hi-Hats, Destroyers, and Boppers more screen time. It also takes sequences from the film, like the fight against the Baseball Furies and the ambush by the all-girl crew known as the Lizzies, and turns them into great gameplay bits. Some of the boss fights, in particular, are great fun. A few come off a little haphazardly, but those few are definitely in the minority.

Given the art design, the destructible environments, and the general flurries of mayhem you can cause, you'd think that The Warriors would be a pretty fantastic-looking game. You'd be wrong. Certainly, the aesthetics aren't without merit, but the basic graphics engine the game uses does little to impress. You won't notice it as much with the environments, because everything is supposed to be drab anyway, thus making the generally low-res textures and minimalist lighting seem completely normal. The character models, however, are not good at all. Sure, Rockstar Toronto got all the nifty little character details in there, but the faces, body parts, and costumes are just kind of ugly. This was probably necessary, to get so many characters onscreen at once and keep the frame rate moving along steadily (which it does); but even so, it's hard to just look past what are some pretty clear-cut graphical problems. Speaking of which, the camera also has an innate tendency to get in your way at inopportune times. It's not awful, and for the most part things are framed well, but when you're in a tight space and surrounded by cops, it rarely works to your benefit. You also won't notice much benefit in picking one version over another. The PS2 and Xbox versions are both practically identical, and even the Xbox version's 720p support doesn't seem to improve things much. Thankfully, the aforementioned good qualities do help--but you'll be hard pressed not to notice some of the graphical flaws.

The audio, on the other hand, is on the other side of the scale. Many of the original actors from the film have returned to voice their characters--at least, most of the ones that are still alive. Guys like Michael Beck, James Remar, and Dorsey Wright once again turn in excellent performances (despite sounding quite a bit older than the 20-something characters they play), and the remaining voice cast delivers, too. It helps that the dialogue is well written, but there's hardly a bad voice actor in the bunch. The one weird thing about the voice work, though, is that a lot of it is made up of lines directly from the film. It seems as though, in some situations, Rockstar might have been better off just taking audio directly from the film rather than rerecording it. Obviously, they'd want the voices to match, but there are situations in which they could have easily gotten away with it, and ultimately would've had a better piece of dialogue.

Barry De Vorzon's original score is fully intact here, as are many of the licensed tracks from the original soundtrack, including songs from artists like Joe Walsh, Fear, and Arnold McCuller. All the songs are most definitely of the '70s, helping to give the game that pulpy, retro vibe that it so clearly seeks. The Warriors also boasts some of the best sound effects you'll hear this year. Every hit is delivered with a high level of ferocity, and you really feel each and every one of them. As things get hectic and start breaking apart all over the place, the din of battle can actually get pretty deafening. It's just excellent audio work all around, and it really increases the intensity of battle by quite a margin.

Magic...whole lotta magic.
When all is said and done with the story mode, The Warriors actually provides a good bit of extra content to play around with. There are multiple multiplayer modes, including two-player co-op for any story mission, as well as a few unique minigames such as quick rumbles, a capture-the-flag variation (involving a girl instead of a flag) and king of the hill. The minigames are merely amusing distractions, although one unlockable game in particular stands out as completely awesome. Titled Armies of the Night, it's basically a side-scrolling beat-'em-up in the tradition of something like a Final Fight or Double Dragon, and includes the opening sequence from Double Dragon, verbatim. Again, totally rad. The cooperative play is about what you'd expect, and it doesn't involve a lot of actual cooperation, so much as it does two people standing next to each other, beating up a lot of dudes. In a couple of nice touches, however, the camera will actually split if the two of you get too far away from one another, and a second player can jump into the game at practically any time, making it a lot more accessible.

With its unrelenting obsession with nailing the details of the film's universe, its quality action, and its breadth of content, The Warriors is easily one of the better pure-action games to come out this year. It's a game that clearly goes out of its way to do more than just rehash a previously told story, as many games based on films tend to do. Again, though, this is not a game in which you have to have seen the original movie to understand and enjoy it; but if anything, it'll make you want to go out of your way to see the movie, just to see how it plays out and compares to the game experience. And in the end, isn't that what all games based on movies try to do in the first place? If you've got a thing for mature-themed action games, The Warriors is well worth your while.

We get an exclusive look at Volition and THQ's upcoming original Xbox 360 game that aims to evolve open-world gameplay.
The debut of new hardware always promises a mix of content from developers that ranges from safe games that are prettier representatives of the major genres from the current generation of platforms to original material from developers that are aiming to try something different. Illinois-based developer Volition, an ambitious studio that has always seen fit to be a little adventurous at hardware launches, as evidenced by disparate titles such as Summoner and Red Faction (which came out in the early days of the PlayStation 2), is at it again with Saint's Row. The recently announced third-person action game aims to mix things up on the Xbox 360 launch with what it's hoping will be an evolution of the open-world-gameplay style that began on the current generation of consoles with Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto III. While there have been a slew of clones that followed in GTA's wake, Volition hopes to do more than simply serve up a by-the-numbers action adventure game that looks pretty. In keeping with the team's penchant for making the most out of existing hardware, Saint's Row is being crafted to evolve the genre. We recently visited the developer to get an exclusive look at a work-in-progress version of the game to see just what Volition has cooking.

The police are an ever-present threat to your crew.
Before we take you through the story of Saint's Row, we'll give you a quick primer on how it came to be, which is its own little Cinderella story in and of itself. Nearly two years ago now, the gang at Volition was doing what all developers do when they begin brainstorming new ideas: thinking big and thinking crazy. Sadly, big and crazy wasn’t exactly possible on the current generation of consoles, so the gang pitched to THQ a concept video that stitched together rap music, still images, and key words that called out the kind of game they wanted to make. The move was pretty ballsy, considering the mature content that blazed across the flashy video was mature, violent, and far more urban than anything THQ had ever done. Surprisingly, the powers that be were intrigued by Volition's pitch and gave the go-ahead to make the big and crazy game.

Over-the-top explosions are made even more spectacular by next-gen hardware.
So what was this big and crazy game? Well, believe it or not, once upon a time, the game was tentatively titled "Bling," and it was an urban action game that cast you as a gang member defending his turf. The gameplay model was an ambitious attempt to take the open-world-gameplay mechanics seen in GTA and evolve them, while simultaneously adding some new ideas. As development moved ahead, the concept was focused and refined. Meanwhile, the title was changed to Saint's Row, after one of the game's settings. Around that time, the rumblings of a new Xbox began, and the Illinois-based studio and THQ both pounced on the promising new hardware, confident it could help realize the team’s vision.

Now with the background out of the way, let's fill you in on Saint's Row's story. You’ll start out as a low-level member of the Third Street Saints, a small gang in Stillwater that's currently on the most wanted list by the three major gangs that control the city. Your popularity is due to the fact that your gang's territory is in a prime locale that would help the rival gangs in their quests to rule the city. Rather than take this lying down by letting your crew get rolled, you decide that the best course of action is to stay alive (and perhaps come out on top) by rolling them. So you set out to conquer the city, one territory at a time.

Cruisin' down the street in my six-four. Conquering the city is no walk in the park, as you'll have to hunt down your rivals' home bases to have total control over their respective areas. As you'd expect, this isn't as easy as it sounds. The basics of your quest are to complete a variety of different missions and earn respect, which will eventually make it possible for you to discover where their bases of power are so you can assault them. While this may sound linear, it's not, as the entire city is open to you, so you'll be able to go anywhere you like. The only limitations are your reputations among rival gangs and local law enforcement. Your actions in the game will cause you to become notorious and hunted if you're not careful. For example, rival gangs will be indifferent to you unless you start attacking their members, at which point you'll start to become a very popular target for any of their crew members that see you. The same holds true for law enforcement officers, who will eye you suspiciously...unless you start killing cops, at which point you may as well be wearing a bull's-eye. Now, in the off chance you happen to max out the gang and police meters, you won't be able to get around and do much of anything, because much death will be flung your way. However, Volition has thrown in a helpful "out" in the form of a plastic surgeon you can visit in the game for an extreme makeover, if you have the cash. If you don't, you'll be able to wait in your home base until the meters go down and you're able to venture out. However, it will take a while, so splurge on the new face if you're in a hurry.

This all raises the question of the game's economy and how you earn cash. The answer to that is simple, "The old-fashioned way." Plan on jacking people for sport and cash, which is nice. Of course, discerning players won't want to get their hands dirty with all that, since breaking and entering is arguably the best way to make cash, thanks to the game's store system. You'll be able to sell your pilfered goods for some nice cash, or you can take advantage of the local pawn shop. However, really industrious players won't mess with all that. They'll just rob the place blind, which all speaks to the variety of options Volition is packing into the game. All told, Volition is packing a grip of stores that offer all manner of content for you to buy or steal, which you can use to trick out your avatar into the ultimate gangster. Also note that the citizens in the game are all about looks, as they'll expect a lot from you, in terms of style, as your stature grows.

A variety of different cars are available to you.
Although we were weren't able to see everything in action, Volition walked us through the character creation process and explained how the missions will unfold. Basically the entire city is open to you and you can go anywhere, although you will be hassled by local gangs when in their territories. The only limitation to where you can go and what missions you can access is your reputation, which you'll have to build by accomplishing tasks. The more you earn, the more that will be available to you, and the more of the story you can unfold. What's key to the "conquer the city" mechanic is making sure you take out a gang's stronghold to ensure its territory remains yours. If you don't, plan on meeting resistance and potentially losing the territory thanks to an aggressive artificial intelligence that isn't about being punked.

Nighttime offers a different view of the city.
The work-in-progress version of the game we saw, while sporting the rough spots you'd expect from a game running off nonfinal hardware, looked promising. We were shown a few different locales, some city streets, and a warehouse interior, as well as a rough look at the character editor. The most stunning aspect was, of course, the 720p resolution and the dynamic lighting. The texture detail was extremely crisp, and the lighting was already looking good, especially when we got a demo of how it will change over the course of the time of day. Character models were a mix of detailed and plain non-player characters. Though they were understandably early presentations, they did look good. Your character, in particular, shows off a slick amount of detail, especially given your customization options at the start if the game and after you get some work done on your face. The game's less subtle elements, namely gunfire and explosions, are looking spot on, offering a wealth of tasty explosions that should satisfy most players' appetites for mayhem and destruction.

Low riding.
The audio was far from complete, with a good deal of placeholder audio being used to offer a rough idea of the direction the game is going in. Stillwater is being made to offer a rich audio experience that will present a sea of voice and ambient effects designed to pull you firmly into its world. The locals will be a chatty bunch with a lot to say about everything, most especially you as your stature grows over the course of the game. Besides offering the expected high-end audio supported by the Xbox 360, the game will have some fun with its tech. When you're in a car, you'll have the expected array of radio stations to listen to. However, once you purchase or help yourself to an MP3 player, you'll be able to listen to the tunes as you go about on foot. In a cool but subtle use of the 360's powerful sound hardware, your MP3 music tracks can drown out the noise of the world around if you turn the volume up on it. However, it's also not the smartest thing to do when you're traveling through rival gang territory, as you'll likely miss key audio clues that will tip you off to someone about to take a shot at you. As a result, the game will let you find your own middle ground so you can adjust your own volume, allowing you to hear what's going on around you while listening to your tunes. At the moment, Volition is keeping pretty low-key about the specifics of the game's voice cast, but the team has some ambitious plans for the cast. The game's soundtrack will also reflect the same approach, with original and licensed music tracks peppered throughout the game.

Concept art of a graffiti-marred church.
Based on what we've seen so far, Saint's Row is very much a diamond in the rough. The ambitious pieces of the game we saw are promising. The Volition crew seems passionate about the game, and it's anxious to get the most out of the Xbox 360. The overall game concept is solid, and the unique elements Volition is focusing on are all good. More importantly, it sounds as though both THQ and Volition are more fixated on ensuring the game realizes the potential all involved feel it has rather than making it out in time for the 360 launch, which is actually a good thing. Given the landscape of early 360 titles, Saint's Row will be a strong addition to the platform's burgeoning library when it hits, not only for its gameplay but also for its smart use of the system's features. Saint's Row is currently slated to ship this holiday, which is just in time for the Xbox 360 launch. Look for more on the game in the coming months.

Guns, low-riders, and gangsters. Welcome to Saint's Row.
MTV and Microsoft teamed up to show off some early facts about the next Xbox, the Xbox 360. As part of the special presentation, 14 games were shown in various stages of completion. One of the early titles on display on the special is Saint's Row, an urban-themed crime/action game currently in the works at THQ.

While no hard information has been revealed about the game, it appears to have both in-car and on-foot action. The brief trailer shows a low-rider rolling up on an SUV, at which point the occupants of the SUV begin dumping at the lo-lo with what appears to be a couple of pistols and an assault rifle. The driver of the low-rider, either being sensible or merely unarmed, takes off into traffic, where he promptly collides with a pair of police cars. It's tough to tell if this footage is rendered using the game engine or if it's a pre-rendered sequence, but the action looks interesting.

What sort of game will Saint's Row be? The early word is that it will be some sort of Grand Theft Auto-like action adventure game, and the footage certainly seems to back up that claim a bit. But we'll have to wait for THQ to let loose some more information on the game before we know for sure.

Saint's Row Hands-On
THQ shows off an updated look at its upcoming Xbox 360 action game and lets us have a look around.
Reps from Volition were on hand at THQ's press event today to show off an updated version of Saint's Row. The upcoming third-person action game for the Xbox 360 has come quite a way since we got our exclusive look at it earlier this year. Though the version on display didn't stray too far from what's been shown previously in terms of content, we managed to get a look at some new areas and get our hands on the game for a bit.

Like the E3 version of the urban action game, this demo let us check out a district in the massive city being crafted for the adventure and get a brief taste of the assorted mechanics you'll use. We were able to walk around, jack cars, visit a shop, and bust caps into fools. The biggest point to note was that the game was running on final Xbox 360 hardware. Despite the game's unfinished state and a few missing effects, we finally got a proper sense of how it's going to run on the 360. The most striking aspect to the visuals was the 720p support, which has yet to be properly captured in screens and video for the promising game. To see the game purring along on an HD monitor is quite a sight. Though the Volition reps were obsessing over what was missing, the game still had a respectable amount of visual polish thanks to high-res textures and a striking sense of scale that were complemented by an impressive draw distance. The lighting still wasn't where the team wants it to be, although a demo of the day and night cycle showed that it's certainly headed in a positive direction. Soft shadows and antialiasing were also lacking, but there was still plenty to appreciate on the visual front.

Aside from the visual flair on display, we got an update on the various features that are being locked down. The game will feature 80 basic vehicles that each feature unique handling. However, you'll see hundreds of different cars thanks to a bevy of variants that provide all manner of different looks for the vehicles. You'll even be able to trick out your wheels to suit your tastes and have a sweet custom ride that includes little touches, like working spinners on your rims. An in-game MP3 player feature has been expanded to let you import tunes from any external device, such as an iPod, and use them as part of the game's soundtrack, in addition to letting you use tunes you buy in the game to flesh out the music you'll be listening to. As far as the radio stations in the game go, you can expect 10 music stations that will feature more than 100 music tracks and two talk-radio stations. Another cool bit about the game's audio is the use of celebrity talent to spice things up. The game's voice cast is set to include a number of notable folks, such as Michael Clark Duncan, Tia Carrere, Daniel Dae Kim, David Carradine, Michael Rappaport, Milla Kunis, Keith David, and Freddy Rodríguez.

One element that was still coming together is the customization feature. While we weren't able to see the most recent iteration of the entire character creation system, we did get a look at what you can modify in the game's clothing shop. Besides the expected gear, such as shirts, jackets, pants, and the like, the Volition gang has gone the extra mile and included an underwear option to ensure that you have power over what kind of drawers people will be seeing.

We also got a look at the homie mechanic--which lets you ring up one of six characters you'll encounter in the adventure and gain that person as a crew member--to see how it's being refined. In our demo we saw a feisty woman named Lin called over to help bust some caps in people. Though the demo showed Lin taking a passenger-side position and basically supporting the main character by targeting whatever he shot at to back him up, the team is aiming to tweak the mechanic to give you the option of having the AI-controlled homie drive while you focus on shooting from the passenger side.

The last part of our demo gave us a look at a never-before-seen downtown area that had a San Francisco feel to it, with towering buildings. It gave us the chance to inspect some of the non-player characters in the game. We got an idea of the level of quality to expect from the pedestrians and cars, although Volition reps stated that both would improve some by the time the game is released. The pedestrians also showed the feedback mechanic that will find them reacting to your character by verbally commenting on his appearance. Besides the pedestrians, we got a look at some of the NPCs and the detailed facial expressions they'll have. You'll find a respectable number of character archetypes that can be modified to offer dramatic variations that bear little resemblance to the original models.

Once the demo was over we had the chance to try out the game ourselves. The on-foot mechanics handled like a third-person action game. There wasn't much in the way of surprises there. However, the car mechanics did yield some nice touches. Driving, aiming, and shooting are a multitasking challenge to be sure, although the mechanic is still in the process of being tweaked. The nice touch to the driving is the camera, which did an impressive job of automatically adjusting as we drove. Trusting the camera to do this took some time, and we had our thumbs on the right analog stick out of habit. Based on this updated look, Saint's Row appears to be on point to follow through on the promise we saw a few months ago. Though the game makes use of a tried-and-true formula, Volition is playing with conventions and appears to be giving the 360 a strong game in its fledgling lineup. Look for more on Saint's Row this October when we bring you more information on the game from Microsoft's X05 press event in Amsterdam.

X05: Saint's Row Updated Hands-On
THQ and Volition show off the latest version of their promising third-person action game for the Xbox 360.
AMSTERDAM--Saint's Row was on display at Microsoft's X05 press event in Amsterdam, and we took the promising third-person action game for a ride. We got our first look at the Volition-developed urban action game earlier this year prior to E3 and were impressed by the ambitious change of pace from Volition's previous work. Since then, we've gotten peeks at the game as it has slowly come together. The version on display at X05 was the most recent, although it was suffering from the expected bumps as it makes the leap to final hardware.

The X05 version offered the meatiest chunk of the game experience we've seen to date. Besides the now-standard option to run around the city experimenting with various gameplay mechanics, the game included some of the ancillary tasks you'll be able to take on in the game. Volition reps on hand noted that the biggest challenge in creating a demo for a game like Saint's Row is the game's open-ended gameplay, which encourages players to explore and go through the game however they like. The demo showed off a portion of the character creation feature, which lets you select a preset Asian, Caucasian, African-American, or Latino visage for your virtual gangbanger. Once you settle on your look, you can run around the city to interact with non-player characters and the environment.

The most noticeable addition to this version of the game is the map screen, which featured icons denoting places of interest such as shops. The cool thing about this particular version of the game was that it was possible to initiate holdups at the stores. The mechanic seems simple--you initiate the act with a button press, then intimidate your target with a weapon until the target heads over to a safe and opens it, leaving you with a stack of money to collect. Driving has also improved quite a bit since our last look at the game, offering tighter handling and a bit of tuning on the camera.

The visuals are looking cleaner, particularly the main character. The environment is also teeming with activity, detailed streets, and buildings. The rough spot to the action was the frame rate, which has taken a hit with the shift to final hardware. Though the action bogged down fairly often, Volition reps noted that it should improve quite a bit once the team goes back for another round of optimizations tailored for the final hardware's specifications.

The audio sounds a little bare-bones at the moment, because the music tracks in the game are being implemented. We heard one track, but for the most part, the full audio package of licensed music tracks has yet to be dropped in the game. However, in talking with reps from Volition, the game is poised to get some pretty cool tunes that should please most folks.

Though the work-in-progress version of Saint's Row we played was rough around the edges, we're still looking forward to it. The content continues to impress us and leave us wanting more. The visuals are stylish and offer a smart showcase for the 360's power. The audio is shaping up to be an interesting collection of ambient noise that will be complemented by the eclectic soundtrack being compiled for the final game. Saint's Row is slated to ship during the Xbox 360's launch window in the US. Look for more on the game in the coming months.

THQ lessens loss, talks next-gen
Strong sales of Destroy All Humans!, Juiced, and licensed games boost publisher; Saint's Row, MotoGP 4, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. delayed, next-gen WWE revealed.
As calendar year 2005 heads into the homestretch, the major players in the game industry are issuing their most recent quarterly earnings reports. Next week will see Electronic Arts and Activision tip their financial hand to stockholders. Today, Sony and Microsoft opened up their ledgers, which showed improved earnings for both companies' game divisions.

Following close behind the electronics giant and software colossus was game publisher THQ. After the markets closed, the company revealed a net loss of $1.4 million ($0.02 per share) for its second fiscal quarter, which ended September 30. The loss was lower than analysts had expected, and much lower than the $6.4 million ($0.11 per share) the company lost during the same period in 2004. Overall, the company saw $142.7 million in net revenue (that is, sales) during its fiscal second quarter, versus $96.3 million during the same period in 2004.

"Our second quarter results reflected strong sales of our original properties Tak, Destroy All Humans! and Juiced, as well as our industry leading portfolio of licensed properties, including WWE Day of Reckoning 2 and Scooby Doo! Unmasked," said president and CEO Brian Farrell in a statement. "Our catalog also continues to perform well, with three of our holiday 2004 titles moving to Greatest Hits [for the PlayStation 2] status during the second quarter." The games in question were The Incredibles, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, and WWE SmackDown! vs. Raw.

Of greater interest to gamers was a postreport conference call, which revealed much about THQ's plans for next-generation consoles. First up was the announcement that two of the company's highest-profile games for the Xbox 360 had been delayed. MotoGP 2006: Ultimate Racing Technology will now debut on the console in the company's fourth financial quarter, which runs from January to March 2006. The same quarter will also see the release of The Outfit, THQ's first World War II shooter for the next-gen console.

Another THQ 360 game, Saint's Row, saw itself bumped from the January-March 2006 quarter. Now, the third-person crime-action game won't go on sale until the first quarter of the publisher's 2007 financial year, which runs from April to June 2006.

Today's conference call also brought news that one of the most-delayed PC games on THQ's roster, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, won't be arriving until the second half of THQ's 2007 fiscal year--October 2006 at the earliest.

In more general next-gen news, THQ revealed that it now has 13 games in development for the forthcoming consoles and it expects to release four of them during its current fiscal year. When asked by analysts, Farrell would not confirm how many of the games would be released in FY2007, saying only that the company also had a "substantial pipeline of games for fiscal 2008 and 2009." He said more detailed announcements would be made in either December or January. However, Farrell did reveal that several next-gen WWE wrestling games were in the works, but he would not go into specifics

As far as the bigger next-gen picture is concerned, Farrell and chief financial officer Edward Zinser told analysts that THQ expects both the PlayStation 3 and Revolution to launch "later in the year" of 2006. However, the pair praised Microsoft's Xbox 360. "The big win is win is the ramp-up of the [360's] installed base," lauded Farrell. He also said Microsoft had "aggressive plans" to expand that base in 2006.

The THQ executives said they would divide their 2006 development efforts among all three consoles. When asked to estimate the division of resources, Farrell said the company would roughly allocate 40 percent for the Xbox 360, 40 percent for the PS3, and 20 percent for the Revolution. "We'll focus a little less on Revolution until we see more," he said, saying the company was increasing its initial work on games for Nintendo's new console.

When asked if they had heard anything about Nintendo releasing a new Game Boy next year, the executives gave a resounding "no." "We haven't heard anything," said Zinser. "But between the PSP, DS, and the legacy GBA...that's a pretty robust handheld market."

As for their overall predictions for the industry, the pair painted a predictably rosy picture. "Entertainment and games seem to be somewhat recession-proof," said Zinsner. "Even in bad times, parents keep buying games."

Xbox 360 launching November 22
[UPDATE 4] Microsoft announces its next-gen console's US launch date at the Tokyo Game Show; console will hit Europe December 2, Japan December 10. Complete press-conference video inside.

Ever since Microsoft revealed that it was going to launch the Xbox 360 worldwide this year, gamers have been asking themselves one question: When? The majority of industry-watchers agreed that it would likely be in mid-November. After all, that would coincide with the fourth anniversary of the original Xbox's November 15 launch and the third anniversary of Xbox Live going online. It would also give developers the maximum amount of time to polish the first games for the console while allowing Microsoft to take full advantage of the holiday shopping season, which traditionally starts the day after Thanksgiving.

As the fourth quarter of 2005 approached, more clues to a mid-November launch surfaced. Even before Microsoft unveiled the machine on MTV on May 12, the network accidentally revealed that the first games for the platform would be "due in November." Later that month, a Canadian subcontractor accidentally told a newspaper that the company had "a huge mandate for getting [the Xbox 360] out for Thanksgiving this year."

Xbox @ TGS 2005 Check out a montage of the Xbox 360 Press Conference from the Tokyo Game Show 2005!
Watch | Download Now it appears that Microsoft will make its pre-Turkey Day mandate…barely. In its pre-Tokyo Game Show conference on Thursday afternoon, Microsoft announced that it is shipping the Xbox 360 in North America on Tuesday, November 22, two days before Thanksgiving. The company also said the console is already being manufactured en masse, with "state-of-the-art facilities producing millions of units."

As previously revealed this week, Microsoft will stagger the release of the Xbox 360 by territory. Europe will get the console on Friday, December 2, while it will hit Japanese store shelves on Saturday, December 10. Microsoft also announced the Japanese price for the Xbox 360. Instead of the two SKUs announced for North America and Europe, Japanese gamers will have only one available for 37,900 yen ($343.20). It will be the equivalent of the $399 Xbox 360 package in the US and will come with the 20GB detachable Xbox 360 hard drive, a wireless controller, a media remote control, a component HD-AV cable, an ethernet cable, and batteries. The first Japanese shipment will include a number of commemorative packs that also bundle in an Xbox 360 headset valued at 2,500 yen. The possibility of a "core" system sans hard drive being released in Japan in the future wasn't ruled out, but there are certainly no plans to do so at this time, even though the only announced game that requires it at this point is Final Fantasy XI.

There will be seven games available for the Xbox 360's Japanese launch:
· Ridge R**** 6
· Frame City
· Dead or Alive 4
· Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter
· (eM)-eNCHANT-arM
· Tetris: The Grandmaster Ace
· Everyparty

Other games confirmed for release during the Japanese Xbox 360 launch period (up to and including January 2006) include:
· Dynasty Warriors 5 Special
· Need for Speed Most Wanted
· Wrestle Kingdom
· Ninety-Nine Nights
· Project Gotham Racing 3
· Tengai Makyou Ziria

Xbox 360 accessories confirmed for the Japanese launch period include:
· Wireless controller
· Controller
· Faceplates
· Memory units
· Wireless LAN adapter
· Play and charge kit
· Rechargeable battery
· D-connection HD AV cable
· Component HD AV cable
· VGA HD AV cable
· S-video HD AV cable
· Headset
· Media remote

"This holiday season, gamers in Japan, Europe and North America pining to experience jaw-dropping high-definition graphics, unmatched online play and compelling digital entertainment features of Xbox 360 will finally have the chance," said chief Xbox officer Robbie Bach. "Renowned development studios around the world are busy putting the finishing touches on their Xbox 360 games. We expect a strong portfolio of titles on launch day and through the holidays that will appeal to fans of every genre and gamers in every region, and with more than 200 games currently in development, continuous new additions to the library are on the way."

Of the 200 games Bach mentioned, 27 will be on display at the Xbox 360 booth at the Tokyo Game Show. Those in bold are expected to be playable.

Microsoft confirms Perfect Dark Zero, others for Xbox 360
Microsoft's head of Xbox marketing says the new console will launch with around 25 games, including Rare's N64 follow-up, Kameo, and Project Gotham Racing 3.
As part of the MTV special devoted to the official unveiling of Microsoft's upcoming console, the Xbox 360, the publisher has confirmed that Perfect Dark Zero, a sci-fi-themed first-person shooter, will be released alongside the new console later this year. The game will feature the adventures of Joanna Dark, a special agent that, at least in her first adventure on the Nintendo 64 back in 2000, fought on a near-future Earth that had been visited by an alien race known as the Maians. The new game will carry on the previous game's first-person-shooter style.

Not much new information on the game has been officially revealed up to this point, but brief segments of the game and its development was shown alongside the system's MTV debut. The footage shows the inside of Rare's motion-capture studio, as well as unfinished footage from the game showing a person shooting at another person flying a jetpack. Players will be able to pilot these jetpacks in the game. A variety of weapons will be included in the final product, but the demo shown in the special focused mainly on a pistol and an assault rifle. What appeared to be an additional viewing mode, perhaps an infrared view, was also shown.

According to Rare, characters will be made up from around 5,000 polygons, and the game's environments will put anywhere from 100,000 to 300,000 polygons onscreen. At least 50 players will be able to play the game at the same time via Xbox Live, though that number may rise before release. The game will also feature some form of split-screen support. Perfect Dark Zero will feature fully destructible environments, with a heavy emphasis on realistic physics. Graphically, the game seems to animate well, though there was a noticeable difference between the full-screen footage and the gameplay you could see when they shot TVs at the actual event. Namely, the frame rate looks nice and smooth in the prepared full-screen footage, but the frame rate was significantly less stable in the version running at the event. Considering the game is still in development, this doesn't come as much of a surprise.

Other games, such as Tony Hawk's American Wasteland, Madden NFL 06, Gears of War, Ghost Recon 3, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 06, Quake 4, Kameo: Elements of Power, Project Gotham Racing 3, NBA 2K6, Call of Duty 2, The Darkness, Saint's Row, and Need for Speed Most Wanted, were also briefly shown. New details for these games include confirmed names for Tiger Woods and Madden, as well as Xbox Live support for Tony Hawk's American Wasteland.

Of the games shown, Microsoft would only confirm three as launch titles. "You can expect to see Kameo, Project Gotham Racing 3, and Perfect Dark Zero in that launch window as three titles that we'll get behind," said Peter Moore, the Microsoft corporate vice president in charge of Xbox's worldwide marketing. Moore told GameSpot that there are "between 25 and 30 titles that are all vying to be part of the launch slate," with even more to come soon after. "Launch is great. Christmas will be right around the corner after that. January, February, and March are also very, very important months," he said.

GameSpot will have more information on the Xbox 360 when Microsoft holds its press conference next Monday night at E3 in Los Angeles. However, for a thorough rundown on what is known about the console, check out GameSpot's special Xbox 360: Inside and Out feature. Havok Engine Powers New Xbox 360 Titles
San Francisco, CA - November 16, 2005 –One of the Havok's Hydra Core technology and world's leading game developers utilized overall expertise to develop their first next-generation Xbox 360 sports title.

In building Amped 3, developed by Indie Built and published by 2K Sports, Indie Built had specific desires and challenges to overcome for their next-generation launch title that only Havok's HydraCore technology had the power to tackle.

Havok, the game industry's leading supplier of cross-platform middleware solutions, developed HydraCore specifically with next-generation game-play in mind. This software technology accelerates games by leveraging multi-core and multi-threaded PC and video game hardware and delivers unparalleled physical game-play experiences, dynamically responsive character animation and true scalability. HydraCore is included for free in all Havok physics products.

Amped 3, a snowboarding game, relies on combining vast mountain settings with the fast-paced action of snowboarders speeding down a mountain, jumping over obstacles and landing rails. Such a challenge would normally be a developer's nightmare as vast scalability to show large mountain ranges and high-fidelity collision detection for snowboarding tricks are both required and either one on their own can cause countless headaches.

Havok Physics allowed Indie Built to easily tackle both problems. Indie's designers were able to create vast mountain ranges yet easily scale down to individual runs, all while the snowboarders jump and trick their way downhill.

"The use of Havok allowed us to expand Amped 3 in a lot of new and exciting directions such as the Park Builder where you can modify the mountain to build your own park; as well as the Sledding mode where you try to hang on for dear life and then score points with your phenomenal crash, " states Steven ZoBell, President of Indie Built, Inc.

"Our HydraCore technology provides the scalabiliy that game developers like Indie Built need to deliver true game-play physics on the Xbox360, " says David O'Meara, CEO of Havok. "Where many companies promise unproven 'futures' , Havok prides itself on delivering cutting edge solutions that work today, when developers need it. With HydraCore, developers don't need to wait for version two; they can take full advantage of multi-threaded next-generation power from the get-go. "

Havok's game-play physics can also be found in the following Xbox 360 titles:

NBA Live 06
Perfect Dark Zero
Condemned: Criminal Origins
As well as in the following upcoming Xbox 360 releases:

The Outfit
Saint's Row
Ghost Recon3: Advanced War Fighter
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Saint's Row Progress Report
We check in on THQ's upcoming Xbox 360 game to see how it's coming along.
With the Xbox 360 launch dust settling, many gamers, always insatiable when it comes to content for a new console they've just picked up, are likely to be wondering what else is on the horizon for the 360. One game due in 2006 is THQ's Saint's Row, a third-person action adventure that puts you in the roll of a gang member out to expand his crew's territory. We got our first look at the game at this year's E3 and were impressed by what developer Volition, best known for its Red Faction series on the PS2, was cooking up for its first Xbox 360 game. Our latest look at a work-in-progress version of the game let us check out some of the action elements and open-ended gameplay.

Cars will be there for the jacking in Saint's Row.
Our look at the game showed off the character customization in greater deal and gave us a better idea of what our options will be when creating our virtual hoodlum. You'll have two options: a quick start that lets you pick from one of several different racial presets before you hop into the game, or an exhaustive editor that lets you tweak practically every aspect of your character's face to the point where re-creating yourself is just a matter of how much time you want to spend doing it. Volition has taken this same approach, albeit in a slightly scaled-back fashion, for the vehicles as well. You'll find that the open-ended gameplay in Saint's Row is big on options. You'll make all sorts of decisions as you go about your business, especially when patronizing shops. These decisions usually revolve around whether you give in to your good impulses or your bad ones. If you're feeling virtuous, you can go ahead and act like a normal patron, choosing your wares and paying before heading out. If you're feeling devious, you can hold up the joint and even plug the shopkeeper when you're done. While this is obviously fun and lucrative, it will get you in trouble with the law eventually.

We were given a peek at just how extreme things can get when you're at your most wanted, which is pretty crazy. SWAT teams deploy from helicopters that shadow your movements, making it difficult for you to shake them. Thankfully, the arsenal of weapons provides you with a pretty reliable method of dealing with a helicopter. As in life, when one is harassed by a helicopter firing shots at you, a rocket launcher will resolve things pretty quickly. Another interesting twist to the gameplay involves the many options that are open to you for making money. As we mentioned, theft is obviously a surefire way to make some bling, but it can get dangerous, like armed robberies often are. Players torn between their need for the finer things and aversion to prolonged firefights with cops will find some creative ways to make their cash. We got to check out "insurance fraud," which lets you make yourself the unfortunate "victim" of any number of mishaps (all of which have a handy monetary value). Simple stuff like falling does OK in the cash department, but if you want to hit the big time then you'll need to get hit by a car. Obviously, there's some danger involved, as you'll want to take enough damage to yield cash, but not so much that your health is totally depleted and you die. It's a fine line to walk, but it's certainly an interesting thing to try.

Open-ended gameplay means you'll have plenty of things to do in the game.
The visuals are still very much a work in progress, although they continue to show the promise of what Volition is attempting to do. We got a look at some of the locales in the Saint's Row district of the city and had ourselves a stroll around a few of the places where you'll be going at the start of the game. As you'd expect, the game borrows pretty liberally from the open-world style pioneered by the GTA series and features a vast city for you to explore. You'll find key locations to investigate, such as shops and mission-specific buildings. However, intrepid players who are looking for some adventure will also find a respectable number of places to poke around in just for your exploring pleasure. The massive city and its impressive scale will be highlighted, thanks to a day-and-night cycle that shows off the 360's processing power. You'll see all manner of subtle lighting elements slowly crop up as the time cycles between night and day. The character models continue to look sharp, with your own personal and fully customizable avatar looking the best. Story-specific non-player characters are the next best-looking set of characters, because of their detailed modeling and promising animation. The rest of the NPCs in the game aren't quite as attractive but still look reasonably good and distinctive, which is useful, as you'll want to be on the lookout when folks loyal to rival gangs are rolling up on you looking for trouble.

Saint's Row Progress Report

Rollin' in my 5.0

In addition to the standard assortment of characters, Saint's Row will feature a wide array of vehicles that will populate the city and serve as something for you to use when you're done with walking. Though the base vehicles you'll see feature a fair amount of detail, in order to really appreciate the car models you'll want to get your own set of wheels and start customizing it. Though the car customization isn't quite as insanely detailed as what you can do with your own character, there's still a good amount of tweaking that can be done. You'll be able to appreciate the detail and interactivity being packed in once you start messing with the environment and blowing things up or taking out vehicles. We caught a look at a helicopter crash, which featured a healthy amount of debris that flew about in a spectacularly dramatic fashion. The only hitch to all of the above is that Volition is still doing a fair amount of work to refine the visuals, so Saint's Row isn't purring along quite as smoothly as it could be. At the moment, the frame rate is still inconsistent and is shy of the solid 30 frames per second Volition is aiming for. However, it sounds as though the extra time gained by shifting its release into early next year will allow the dev team to polish things up.

Explosions. Where would crime sim games be with out them?
Though the audio is set to offer a wide variety of music, ambient noise, and voice acting, the version we saw didn't quite have all the pieces in place. Music was used sparsely and wasn't as integrated as it will be. Fortunately, the voice acting is pretty far along and was already being implemented. In checking out one of the in-game cinematics, we were able to catch an earful of some of the celebrity voice cast being tapped. The cinematic involved Michael Clarke Duncan as Benjamin King and Daniel Dae Kim as Johnny Gat having an exchange that led to a new mission that involved shooting up some fools at a penthouse. The pair of actors did a fair job of playing heavies and seemed to ham things up sufficiently. Ambient noise, whether general effects or chatter from the locals, is shaping up well and sells you on the feel of a living city. You'll hear all manner of people doing their thing and even commenting on you and the rep you appear to have based on your appearance.

Big scary dude Benjamin King will be voiced by big scary actor Michael Clarke Duncan.
Based on what we saw, Saint's Row is looking like an intriguing game for the Xbox 360 next year. The meaty adventure and array of options certainly appear to give players a respectably sized and tricked-out sandbox to play in for its single-player experience. The addition of the yet-to-be fully disclosed multiplayer elements should add a good amount of content to be explored as well. If you're starting to wonder what's next now that you've bagged a 360 and are dutifully plowing through all the games you bought, Saint's Row may well be worth keeping your eye on. It is currently slated to ship in early 2006. Look for more in the coming months.
